Year 2: Dana and Tadeu

“Somos amaldiçoados,” spittle flew from Bezarra's lips as he focused on whatever madness possessed him. “Deus castiga-nos o nosso pecado!” He turned and strode back down the line, speaking so fast that there was no chance Dana could understand him.

“We are cursed,” Tadeu translated. “God punishes us for our sins.” He sounded bored as he continued in a monotone. “We did not repent fast enough when God made us mad, so he sent the pestilence and disease to kill the unworthy.”

Dana sighed. “That was just untreated water and lack of medicines.”

Bezarra stopped in front of her and all but shouted in her face.

“Now he sends a plague of Zombies,” Tadeu translated, “and other monsters from the pit to... how do you say, chastise us.”

“They are not real Zombies,” Dana said, impatiently. “That's just stupid!”

Cabo Bezarra stepped in and slapped her across the face, hard. He grabbed her by the throat, balled his fist and punched her face twice with slow deliberation.

“He understood that,” Tadeu told her. “If you call him stupid again he will beat you to the ground and kick you till you bleed from every orifice.”

Apparently she didn't answer fast enough. She was aware of the third punch but after that it got confusing until it all turned to nothing.
